a virtual "poke" (email, instant message, etc.) usually sent for reminder purposes.

2. ping
The time it takes for a network packet to leave your computer, go to another one, and return. Lower = better. Can also be a source of gloating in network games. Typically measured in milliseconds.
"Dude, your ping is 300. Get the hell off my server before I boot you!"

"Ha ha, lowest ping!"

"Packet Inter-Networking Groper." PING Can be used as a command in MS-DOS. Early computer programmers used this acronym because of it's similarities to a SONAR ping. A computer ping will send a packet of data from one computer to another to measure the time it takes for information to be sent and received. Pinging a computer can also help diagnose problems within networked computer systems.

Tool for testing network connectivity.
Uses ICMP )(internet message control protocol). Sends an icmp packet to target remote host(s). Commonly you can specify options such as the payload , ttl , sequence number, and offset.
The unix admin used ``ping`` to test out
the new router.

To fire all eight shots of the M1 Garand. It was a WW2 rifle that is seen in games such as Call of Duty and Medal of Honor. Particularly used when desribing firing off the last few shots to get a reload in a game.
After 8 shots, the M1 Garand empties its clip with a distinct *PING*
